How to wear a pashmina

One piece, several ways to wear it, from morning coffee to dinner. No complicated knots.

The virtue of a pashmina is that it does a lot with a little. It is a rectangular piece, no fastenings, no structure, and yet it changes an outfit entirely depending on how you let it fall. These are the ways we use ours most days.

Loose over the shoulders

The simplest. Open it fully and rest it over the shoulders, both ends hanging at the front. It works over a dress, a shirt or an open coat. This is the way for a cool evening when you want nothing more on top.

The Parisian loop

Fold the piece in half lengthways, pass it behind the neck and thread the ends through the loop it leaves. It holds without tightening and stands up to wind. This is the daytime way, over a coat.

Crossed under a coat

Take the pashmina around the neck with one end longer than the other, cross them at the front and tuck both under the coat. It adds a layer of warmth without bulk and keeps a clean line. This is the way for genuinely cold days.

A pashmina does a lot with a little.

As a large kerchief

Fold it into a triangle, rest the point on the chest and take the ends around the back and loosely to the front again. It is a more casual way, for the weekend, over a t-shirt or a linen jacket.

As a layer

A stole is one of the easiest ways to add warmth without weight. Over a shirt, under a coat, between a dress and a jacket - it sits close to the body, adds a colour, and comes off the moment a room warms up. In Bogotá, where the morning and the afternoon can be two different climates, it is most of what you need.

None of these needs pins or practice. The cloth does almost all the work, and a good piece falls well even when you leave it to chance.
